When most people hear the word BOTOX®, they think of injections used to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, the lines and creases that form as a result of facial movements like smiling and frowning. But BOTOX® injections aren’t just used for cosmetic purposes. They have other applications that many people may find a little surprising.
BOTOX® Injections: Many Applications
BOTOX® is a neuromuscular agent that uses a very mild toxin to block nerve signals, preventing them from releasing a special chemical called acetylcholine that normally “tells” muscles to contract. By blocking these nerve signals, the muscle essentially becomes temporarily paralyzed. Over time, BOTOX® injections reduce muscle contractions and cause muscles to become less stiff.
Although BOTOX® is used primarily for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles, the FDA has approved its use for the treatment of several other conditions, including:
- eyelid spasms (blepharospasm)
- spasms of the neck and shoulder
- excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
- crossed eyes (strabismus)
- overactive bladder and some types of urinary incontinence
- limb spasticity following a stroke
- facial spasms
BOTOX® is also widely used “off-label” – that is, to treat conditions where it has not expressly been approved by the FDA, but which studies have shown it to be safe and effective. These off-label uses include:
- vocal cord contraction (laryngeal dystonia) and problems swallowing
- excess salivary action (hypersalivation)
- allergic rhinitis
- cerebral palsy
- forceful contractions of the lower face and jaw (oromandibular dystonia)
In all these applications, BOTOX® is administered in a similar way: The powder form of the drug is diluted to a specific concentration and then injected into the affected muscle tissue.
